Volunteers in Mission, 2006
Berwyn UM Church dispatched a construction and medical team to
Ahuachapan, El Salvador
from January 10th to January 21, 2006.
The medical team consisted of Carol Cherry (nurse), Dr. Alvin Moyer (St.
Andrew UMC), and Carlos Gusheken (New Berlinville UMC). They worked out of the
Methodist Medical Clinic. The rest of the mission team (Rick
Stoker, Sebastian Galvez, Scott Campbell, Steve Cherry, Janelle Larson, Brian
Walker and Nancy Atchison) worked in construction of a new church
building.
Along with the members of Berwyn UMC, this team was augmented
with the presence of: Barbara Wenger (Lincoln Park UMC), John Stauffer, Mary
Ann Stauffer, David Stauffer (New Berlinville UMC).
The Berwyn UM Administrative Board, at it's meeting on January 31, 2006, adopted a
resolution establishing a covenant relationship
with Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Roca Eterna in Ahuachapan.
Ahuachapan is the headquarters of the Methodist Church in El Salvador. The church
(New Jerusalem Methodist Church) that is being built is a fairly large one. It is
designed to seat up to 400. There are also plans to build a Christian Education
Center and a parsonage. This team worked on laying the floor of the church.
A number of members have committed to support, with a scholarship, some of the
young people with whom we worked and got to love, respect, and appreciate.
Nancy Atchison will be supporting Alexander. Janelle Larson will be supporting Mayra; Jennie
Scudder-Levin: Melvin; Brian Walker-Ana Alicia; the Hall and Campbell
families-Rosa; Barbara Wenger-Jose; the Stauffer family-Jose Miguel; and Pastor
Phil-Filadelfo.
You may support any of these young persons by making a check payable to Berwyn UMC
for $320.00. In the memo please write "VIM Scholarship". This supports a student for
a year.
Dr. Alvin Moyer and RN Carol Cherry served as volunteers at the clinic. This clinic
is operated by the church for those who can't pay for medical care. Some of the money
that was contributed for the mission trip went to purchasing medicine for the clinic.
