Missions: A place for everyone..... we are in missions all the time.

We are excited about missions at Berwyn Methodist Church! An overview is presented below, and more specific programs are located to the right. There are many levels on which you can be involved, from planning a trip to an area in need, participating in any of the missions and outreach at BUMC, or lending a hand around the community. There are also other active seasonal mission projects that you can be a part of.

Cereal and Juice for REACT
We have an exciting new opportunity to be in service to others at BUMC! The first Sunday of every month (Communion Sunday at Berwyn), we will be collecting boxes of cereal and/or bottles of juice for Valley Forge REACT.

Valley Forge REACT is a non-profit organization which receives and distributes donated food to people in need. Mabel Purcell, President of Valley Forge REACT, works closely with the Tredyffrin Police Department as well as the Upper Mainline Ministerium to identify families in need or those needing emergency assistance. REACT gives food to 60-80 families per month. 75% of these people are senior citizens and the remaining 25% are families with young children.

Valley Forge REACT is affiliated with REACT International, a volunteer emergency communications organization of amateur radio operators.

As we gather together at the Lord's Table, please remember Jesus' charge to care for those in need! Baskets will be located at the back of the sanctuary to collect your donation(s). Please give generously. Contact Betsy Newman at 610-644-2683 with any questions.

Caring for In-Home Senior Citizens
Interested in providing care to seniors in their homes? Visiting Angels has paid jobs available for caregivers to provide in-home care for seniors. Duties will include assistance with hygiene, meals, and light housework. Call 610-924-9663 to schedule an appointment to apply for our registry. We are looking for those persons who see care giving as a position of compassion.
PA's Education Crisis: Children at Risk
The Church and Society Committee is taking an ative role in Pennsylvania's education crisis.

Because of insufficient state funding, public education in Pennsylvania is overly dependent on local wealth, with the result that the quality of educational opportunity for children varies widely.

For example, spending in Lower Merion School District was recently more than $6,000 per student per year higher than in Philadelphia, and more than $8,000 per student per year higher than in a nearby rural Chester County school district.
  • In national comparisons, Pennsylvania ranks 37th out of 50 for efforts to make sure education funds in the state are spent fairly across the Commonwealth.
  • The state share of school costs is far below the national average and ranks Pennsylvania near the bottom of the 50 states.
In addition, the amount of state appropriations on a per pupil basis also lags the national average. In addition to a disparity in educational resources, Pennsylvania also has a great disparity in local school taxes, ranging from 10.8 mills to 42.5 mills. Ironically, it is many of the poorest school districts that have the highest tax rates, yet still do not have adequate levels of funding to ensure a high quality education is available to all students.
